Dear Ayrshire Skincare Family,
The Itch That Turned Me into a Daily Moisturiser Convert
A few years ago, I ended up at the doctors with two miniscule, but really itchy spots on my leg. Nothing dramatic — just annoying; the kind of itch you scratch without thinking and then wonder why it won’t go away.
The doctor took one look and said, “You’ll need to moisturise.”
I laughed. “I can’t do that,” I told him. “I’m a man.”
He didn’t laugh back. “You’ve no choice,” he said.
So, I did what he said, and reluctantly took the prescription he offered. Next morning I applied his lotion. Really greasy stuff, it seemed to help, but what a mess. It wouldn’t absorb. I had an awful job washing it off my hands, and I had to wash the sticky remains from my shins before going to bed, 12 hours later. Next morning after my shower, I looked around the bathroom. Spotted the Morning Moisturiser my wife uses and thought “why not?” That did the trick. Absorbed easily. No clean-up necessary. From then on, I started applying our own product to my legs — ankle to knee, front only, nothing fancy. I wasn’t trying to prove a point. I just wanted the itching to stop.
Within a week, it had. Completely. Within a month, I’d genuinely forgotten I’d ever had a problem there in the first place.
That was the moment moisturising stopped being a chore and became a habit. Get up. Shower. Moisturise. It takes less time than making a coffee, and it’s been part of my routine every single day since.
The Bit I Didn’t See Coming
Here’s what surprised me: the difference wasn’t just that the itch disappeared. My skin changed. My wife, who notices these things far more than I do, told me recently, “You have skin like a woman.”
I know how that sounds. But she meant it as a compliment about texture and softness — the kind of skin most men my age simply do not have, because most men my age don’t moisturise at all.
That’s really the whole story. A minor medical nuisance turned into a daily habit I never expected to keep. The habit turned into a visible, tangible difference in how my skin actually looks and feels.
Why I’m Telling You This
I’m on Day 3 of questioning almost everything the skincare industry tells us — what’s necessary, what’s marketing, what actually works. But this particular story isn’t a theory. It’s not a claim I’m making because I sell moisturiser. It’s just what happened to me, in order, without me trying to make it happen.
Men are, on the whole, badly served by the skincare conversation. It’s aimed at women, styled for women, and most of us quietly opt out — until something forces the issue, like it did for me. An itch. A doctor with no patience for excuses. A tube of moisturiser I happened to have access to because we make it.
I’m not going to tell you moisturising fixes everything. I’m not a doctor and this isn’t medical advice — if you’ve got a persistent itch or skin complaint, see someone qualified, the way I did. But I will tell you this: a thirty-second habit, done consistently, did more for my skin in a week than years of ignoring it ever did.
If You’re Reading This on a Break
You’re busy. I get it — that’s exactly why this story is short. But if there’s one thing worth taking from Day 3 of this series, it’s this: the boring, unglamorous, “why would a man bother” habit is often the one that actually works. Not the serum. Not the seven-step routine. Just moisturiser, applied daily, without fuss.
If this resonated — if you’ve got your own “I didn’t think I needed this until I did” moment — I’d love to hear it. Drop a comment or send a message. That’s genuinely how I want to build this: real experiences, compared notes, no pretence.
I’ll be back on Monday with Day 4. See you then
