If you spend time and money looking after your face, there is one part of your skincare routine you may be forgetting.
Your neck, and below it, your décolletage — the upper chest area that appears whenever you wear an open-necked dress, shirt or top.
We wash our faces. We moisturise them. We sometimes spend a small fortune on products designed specifically for them. Then we stop at the jawline.
Why?
The skin on the neck and upper chest is delicate and can be more prone to dryness and dehydration than the face. It also receives plenty of exposure to the weather and sun, while everyday movements and sleeping positions can contribute to the appearance of lines and creases.
And because these areas are so often neglected, they can begin to look different from the face.
You can have beautifully cared-for facial skin, only to put on a low-cut dress and discover that the neck and chest haven’t had quite the same attention.
We think that’s a shame. Not because you need another complicated skincare regime.
Quite the opposite. We think you need a simple one.
There are several things women notice as they get older.
The skin can become thinner-looking and less supple. It can develop a crepey texture. Fine lines and wrinkles become more noticeable. There may be lines across the chest or vertical lines associated with sleeping on your side.
And, of course, there is sun exposure.
The neck and décolletage are often exposed to the same weather as your face but don’t always receive the same protection and care.
So what should you do about it?
Let’s be honest about this one.
If you regularly expose your neck and décolletage to the sun, sun protection matters.
That’s not something we can currently provide at Ayrshire Skincare. Our own product for this purpose is still under development, so it will be some time before we can offer it.
In the meantime, use a sunscreen you trust when these areas are exposed.
We would rather tell you that honestly than pretend our moisturiser does something it doesn’t.
This is where we think some skincare advice has gone a little too far.
Exfoliate. Strip. Peel. Scrub. Start again.
We’re not convinced.
Particularly when we’re talking about the neck and décolletage, we think gentle is better.
You don’t need to scrub delicate skin until it feels squeaky clean.
You don’t need to pull at it.
You don’t need to rub vigorously.
And you certainly don’t need a ten-step routine simply because somebody has managed to invent ten steps.
There is something to be said for the wisdom of our grandmothers.
Cleanse it. Moisturise it. Look after it. And be consistent.
If you’re already cleansing your face, simply take the cleanser a little further south.
Your neck and décolletage deserve the same consideration.
We particularly don’t like the idea of harsh soap stripping away the skin’s natural oils.

Argan oil is a nourishing plant oil used to condition and soften the skin.
Pumpkin seed oil is another rich botanical oil, chosen for its skin-conditioning qualities.
Sodium hyaluronate, a form of hyaluronic acid, helps attract and retain moisture.
Glycerin is another well-established moisturising ingredient that helps the skin hold onto water.
And then there are the ingredients that give Berber its particular character — frankincense, geranium and vitamin E.
We don’t put ingredients into our products simply because they sound impressive.
We want to know what each ingredient is doing there.
That’s part of our approach to skincare: fewer ingredients, more thought.
If your face is worth moisturising twice a day, why would you stop at your chin?
After cleansing, take a small amount of Berber Cellular Intense and gently apply it to your face, neck and décolletage.
Don’t pull.
Don’t tug.
Don’t scrub.
Just be gentle.
